One thing I observed is that Xerxes was portrayed as the epitome of paganism, androgynous, pierced and tattooed. It's clear who the bad guy is, not so in most movies these days, where evil is portrayed as cool and sophisticated. In the 300 it is seen for what it is, there is a chill when you see the evil and it makes you want to hate it.
